Fifth Annual Assistive Technology Expo Draws Large Crowd
Saint Francis University’s Center of Excellence for Remote and Medically Under-Served Areas held an Assistive Technology Exposition on November 4, 2009, at CERMUSA’s satellite office, the National Telerehabilitation Service System, located within the Hiram G. Andrews Center, Johnstown.
This is the fifth year CERMUSA has conducted this Expo, which is free and open to the public. Thirty vendors participated and showcased technologies and services meant to help improve the lives of people with disabilities, older adults, and warriors in transition.
A new exhibit this year was an independence living module, which is a technology-filled home addition meant to promote self-sufficiency for special populations. The event also featured three breakout sessions conducted by subject matter experts on topics including the benefits of exercise, home safety, and alternatives to nursing home care.
The opening ceremony featured keynote speaker Ronald W. Drach, President, Board of Directors, Wounded Warrior Project, and Director of Government and Legislative Affairs for the Labor Department’s Veterans Employment and Training Service. Guest speakers included John Hugya, Chief of Staff, office of Congressman John P. Murtha, and Brigadier General (PA) Scott D. Wagner, Deputy Adjutant General for Veterans Affairs.
