National Telerehabilitation Service System (NTSS)

In February 2001, Saint Francis University’s Center of Excellence for Remote and Medically Under-Served Areas (CERMUSA) established the National Telerehabilitation Service System (NTSS) at the Hiram G. Andrews Center in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. The NTSS is an initiative to capitalize upon the results of a collaborative proof-of-concept Telerehabilitation research study. This system investigates and researches emerging information technologies (IT) that can be used to increase access to education, training, counseling, and healthcare for persons with disabilities to better allow them to live and compete in a global economy.

NTSS Mission:

"The NTSS is an alliance of researchers, service providers, and technologists who improve accessibility to quality comprehensive rehabilitation services for people with disabilities through the application of sustainable technologies and applied research."

NTSS Facilities:

  • Telerehabilitation Software Testing and Evaluation Laboratory - an area for evaluating various forms of software and other technologies for ease of use by persons with disabilities
  • Electronic Seminar Room - an area where groups with a variety of disabilities can participate in video teleconferencing (VTC) activities
  • Telerehabilitation Research Laboratory - an area for developmental technology research, VTC area, as well as administrative activities
Assistive Technology Exposition

Since 2005, CERMUSA has conducted an Assistive Technology Exposition (AT Expo) at the NTSS. This event was started to provide residents from the surrounding area (which is comprised of a large population of older adults, individuals with disabilities, and warriors in transition) with the opportunity to learn about technology devices and services that can enhance their quality of life.
